What does a Technical
Business Analyst do?

The role, the skills that make a BA "technical," and where a data-focused BA fits between the business and the engineers who build.

A Technical Business Analyst (Technical BA) translates business needs into validated, build-ready data and system specifications — and unlike a traditional BA, they do the technical verification themselves. They run requirements workshops, but they also query the actual source tables, profile the data, draft data models and source-to-target mappings, and prototype the target report in SQL or a BI tool before a single sprint is committed. The role sits between business stakeholders and engineering: it exists to remove ambiguity early, so developers build from specifications that have already been checked against real data — not from assumptions that fall apart in testing.

BA vs. Technical BA

A traditional Business Analyst gathers requirements and documents them. A Technical Business Analyst does that and then verifies them against the data and systems involved. The difference is hands-on capability: a Technical BA can open the source database, check whether the field a stakeholder is describing actually exists and is populated, and confirm the proposed rule is feasible — before it becomes a developer's problem.

What a Technical BA actually does

Requirements & source-system analysis

Runs stakeholder workshops to capture what the business needs, then profiles the real source tables — SAP, Workday, a warehouse — to confirm the data exists and behaves as assumed. Requirements reflect the data that's actually there, not the data everyone hopes is there.

Data modeling & mapping

Drafts conceptual and dimensional data models and writes source-to-target mapping documents precise enough that ETL developers and testers work from one source of truth. Every field has a defined origin, transformation, and destination.

Prototyping & validation

Mocks up the target report against live data in SQL, Power BI, Tableau, or Spotfire and walks stakeholders through it before a sprint is committed. If the chart isn't what they meant, that's discovered in a 30-minute prototype review — not in UAT three weeks later.

Why teams value the role

A Technical BA who can query is the cheapest insurance a data programme can buy. Ambiguity gets resolved in discovery instead of surfacing in UAT, which is where budgets and timelines actually blow out. For agency partners, a strong Technical BA is often the difference between an engagement that scopes cleanly and one that churns. It's a core part of our data governance & Technical BA practice.

Key takeaway: a Technical BA is a Business Analyst who verifies their own requirements against real data and prototypes the result — closing the gap between "what the business asked for" and "what engineering can build."
